Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
