Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images were from was based on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
