In excess of 60,000 Run from Sudan's City Following Capture by RSF Paramilitary Group, United Nations States

As stated by the UNHCR, more than 60,000 civilians have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the militia RSF during the weekend.

Accounts suggest mass executions and crimes against humanity as militia members entered the city after an year-and-a-half blockade featuring starvation and heavy bombardment.

The exodus of those escaping the violence towards the town of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had increased in the last several days, according to UNHCR spokesperson.

Survivors were describing horrendous stories of violence, such as sexual violence, and the humanitarian group was having trouble to find sufficient accommodation and supplies for them.

All children was experiencing malnutrition, she commented.

Estimates suggest that in excess of 150,000 people are still stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's remaining stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has rejected broad accusations that the executions in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and mirror a practice of the Arab paramilitaries attacking non-Arab communities.

Yet the paramilitary group has detained one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with on-the-spot executions.

The organization released video revealing the militiaman's detention subsequent to identification that he was responsible for the execution of numerous civilians close to el-Fasher.

Social media platform has verified that it has banned the channel connected to Lulu. It is not clear whether he had operated the account in his identity.

Sudan was thrown into a domestic fighting in April 2023 after a intense contest for control began between its army and the RSF.

This has led to a food crisis and accusations of mass killing in the Darfur area.

Over 150,000 individuals have lost their lives in the fighting throughout the country, and roughly 12 million have abandoned their residences in what the United Nations has described as the world's largest humanitarian disaster.

The takeover of el-Fasher strengthens the regional separation in the country, with the RSF now in control of the western region and much of adjacent Kordofan to the south, and the military occupying the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the coastal region.

The two warring rivals had been partners - gaining control together in a takeover in 2021 - but split over an internationally backed proposal to transition to civilian rule.
