As Swimmers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous local residents, detected pops reverberating through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her residence, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of acts of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and paramedics caring for dozens of victims.

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the scene of the incident transforming into a impromptu medical station. In the days after the events, comments of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The group of beach patrol published a message, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the care shown towards our team,” the organization wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting commenced until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.
